Digital Health Literacy In The Elderly: Exploratory Study In Senior Universities In Portugal
This study aims to identify the level of digital literacy and digital health literacy among elderly individuals attending Senior Universities in Portugal. This is an ongoing cross-sectional study, of mixed nature and exploratory approach. Data were collected from 34 Portuguese elderly individuals living in two municipalities in the Center of Portugal, using instruments such as MMSE, sociodemographic questionnaires and the eHealth Literacy Scale. A literature review of scientific publications (2018-2024) was conducted to support the theoretical framework and discussion of results. The data showed that most participants had access to the internet but had difficulty distinguishing reliable information from dubious sources. In addition, many reported feeling insecure when using digital content to make health decisions, highlighting the need for greater digital literacy among this population. Assistance in using technology was a relevant factor for digital inclusion, but a significant group still does not have adequate support. The study also indicated that, despite frequently using health services, many older adults struggle to understand patient information leaflets and navigate digital platforms. It was concluded that there is an urgent need for training programs aimed at the elderly population, aiming to increase their health literacy, digital autonomy and ensure safe access to health information. Future research could explore comparisons between different socioeconomic contexts and assess the impact of educational interventions in promoting digital health literacy.
