Integrating Accessibility Guidelines With Unity 3d: A Plugin For Fast and Inclusive Game Development

This paper explores the development of a plugin for Unity 3D that facilitates the implementation of accessibility guidelines in digital games. The plugin adopts a modular approach, integrating accessibility requirements with minimal programming effort and providing support for visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments, including color blindness. It offers ready-to-use code that streamlines the development of inclusive experiences, saving time, costs, and technical effort. The guidelines that informed the development of this plugin were defined based on various specialized sources, consolidating essential accessibility practices in game development and encompassing internationally recognized recommendations. These guidelines were selected to ensure the effective implementation of accessible features in Unity 3D. The main contribution of this work is to provide a complete and innovative plugin, making the development of accessible games more feasible, inclusive, and aligned with industry best practices. The plugin is designed to simplify the integration of accessibility features in a modular and customizable way, allowing developers to adapt their applications to the needs of diverse audiences. In addition to reducing barriers, it promotes inclusion and encourages the adoption of accessibility guidelines in game development.
