Architecting Circularity Through An Internet of Digital Twins Framework
Sustainability continues to be an ever-growing concern, particularly in the context of industrial supply chains, wherein collaborative data sharing ecosystems play a critical role in determining environmental and economic outcomes. Despite ad-vancements in technology, supply chains often remain fragile, lack transparency, and have limited resilience. Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) has emerged as a potential approach to help address these issues, leveraging technologies such as Digital Twins and Data Spaces to provide a digital marketplace for matching manufacturing demand with available capabilities. However, existing MaaS archi-tectures do not prioritize sustainability. This research aims to address these gaps by proposing an extension to MaaS, focusing on sustainability and being sup-ported by an Internet of Digital Twins (IoDT) as. This paper reviews the state of the art of MaaS and its core components, identifies limitations in its current im-plementations, and presents our vision for a federated approach for sharing in-formation within the IoDT.
